Pakistan & Iran – This engagement came as part of discussions held during the official visit of the President of Iran, Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, to Pakistan from April 22 to 24.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Raisi held delegation-level talks, accompanied by senior officials from both sides. They highlighted the importance of cooperation in various sectors, including energy, trade & connectivity.
In a joint statement, both nations expressed their determination to transform the common border into a corridor of prosperity, highlighting plans for joint economic projects, the establishment of economic free zones, and the facilitation of border trade. Furthermore, they reiterated their commitment to key energy projects such as the Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline.
Finalization of FTA
To expedite the completion of the FTA, both sides agreed to convene soon sessions of various bilateral forums, including the Annual Bilateral Political Consultations and the Joint Economic Commission. They also committed to facilitating the exchange of economic and technical experts and delegations from chambers of commerce.
As members of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), both nations affirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in connectivity, infrastructure development & energy sectors. They also agreed to expand links between Gwadar and Chahbahar ports.
In the area of connectivity, Pakistan and Iran expressed satisfaction over regular shipment of goods under the TIR Convention and committed to making it fully operational for efficient trade.
